We are excited to welcome our newest artists in residence to the Jasper Studios Artist Residency Program, Patricia Swanson and Patricia Thomas! Every three months, artists in Philadelphia are welcomed to apply to the artist residency program. Artists that are chosen will receive a work studio space among an existing community of over 50 artists and entrepreneurs.
Patricia Swanson's work examines the relationships between personal and universal narratives and how those become interconnected through the common ground of human experience and the act of sharing. Her work merges traditional and digital photographic techniques to explore the tactile properties of visual experiences in an effort to bring photographs away from the wall and into a physical space.
Patricia Swanson is an artist from Bellingham, Washington and is currently living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She received her BA in Studio Arts and English Literature from Western Washington University and her MFA in Photography at the Tyler School of Art.
Exploring the imagery of blackface, the artist uses it as a form of self-discovery, and self-criticism. She considers the exploitation of the Black body, specifically the over-sexuality of Black women, Black youth, and connects older imagery with today. She challenges the Westernized idealized standard of beauty, the Westernized standard of figure painting, and the history of the use, voyeurism, and exoticism of black bodies in what is now modern-day advertising.
